Mixed Media Angel

Mixed Media Angel (in progress)

I started with an art board and painted it with Teal Golden acrylic
Then I covered the board with a teal colored paper I found using Golden Matte Medium as glue. Sometimes you have to water the glue down a bit to make it spread easier and so its not clumpy when your using it as glue. You can also use ModgePodge if your more comfortable with that.
I used various brown craft paints on the teal paper to age it along with some of the Golden cobalt teal but use the teal very sparingly. A little goes a long way!
I have this beautiful heavy paper with writing on it that I used on top of the teal paper, kind of as a frame for the picture. I also used muslin that I had previously tea stained. On top of that I added a smaller piece of gold paper that I had but I tore the edges to make it more raggedy. I usually always use ripped paper. The raw edges take paint and distress inks better than a smooth flat undistressed paper. The muslin is also ripped to fray the edges.
Before adding the angel photo I painted the photo with a little bit of Burnt Umber craft paint to age it. It gave it that sepia look. All of the prints/photos I use are ordered from snapfish. Its my understanding that they use something in finishing the photos that allows them to accept paint.

Adding all of these layers in such a centered way is very unlike most of the art that I do but this picture just seemed best in the center of the page. I have found when making mixed media pieces you can't really duplicate any particular thing. You just have to feel your way through the piece it feels right. Like life, it's a lesson in faith as you move through the layers.
Next I used a distress spray that I have. It is my favorite spray. I think it is Tim Holtz but I'll have to look that up. I used a baby wipe to wipe the spray off as I went and I used a heat gun to dry things also. You can use any acrylic watered down and either dry brush it very lightly going heavier as you go or you can put it on and take it off but work quickly so it doesn't dry.
I have some papers picked out that I plan on using to finish this piece and I will add the next blog post with the photos of finishing.
Maybe I'll get in the art room today?!

Dandelions in December

I woke up and decided to take Jonathan to the park today, very early, to run him out of energy. In hind site this was probably a bad idea since it was FREEZING cold outside and the park I chose is right next to the Delaware River. Kind of like a lake affect only worse. Brrr.
After running and running and running and running (X's 1 million) he came to a stop at a perfectly yellow splash of color on the ground. Peculiar. It was a dandelion in December! He couldn’t resist. He bent down and plucked it up, placing it under his nose and breathing deep, he then offered it to me.” For you Mom-mom.”
At first I was both happy and sad~~ I’m pretty sure he picked the last dandelion on earth until spring. Then I realized that, although he is only 3, he fully appreciates the moments to stop and smell the flowers. He doesn't feel badly about taking what brings him joy and he never looks back. When the moment is gone he just moves on to the next perfect moment.
Lesson learned.

  1. Stop and notice~~ no matter how fast your running
  2. Claim the object of desire~~ it was a gift
  3. Immerse yourself in the moment, breath deeply and suck up every last loveliness.
  4. Give the flower to your Grandmom. They like that kinda stuff.
  5. Carry on with running.

Last night I found a killer recipe for Quinoa and changed it up a bit. It turned out amazing! It is packed with protein and iron and totally vegan. I was so happy!

So here it is off the top of my head
First make one cup of uncooked quinoa. Let that cook while you do the rest.

Saute one onion, chopped, and one carrot chopped in about a tablespoon of oil. Add in a half lb of sliced muchrooms. I used baby bella but you could use almost anything. Then stir in the cooked quinoa. Once thats been incorporated stir in 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1 tsp of cummin. My cummin is really potent so next time I think I'll add a 1/2 tsp. Use your judgement. Now I added salt to taste. Add about three cups of spinach to the top and let it steam for a minute with the lid on. Once it wilts slightly stir it into the rest of the mixture. Now stir in about 1/2 to 1 cup of crushed tomatoes. Voila! Your done!
My intention for this originally was to make stuffed cabbage but I didn't have time so I boiled the outer leaves and used them as a bed under the Quinoa. I sprinkled it with roughly chopped salted cashews and had rice with it. DELISH!!!
Try it, You will not be disappointed!
